ÓÐR: The Sunken Flesh is a Survival Horror game set in a mysterious 'sunken labyrinth'. Wield flares, ration your oxygen, avoid ghosts, and collect keys as you slowly untangle this twisted web of flooded corridors as you attempt to escape with your life.

Created in about 1 month for the 2023 itch.io Liminal Jam.

The rural European village of Sunken Bank was the site of a terrible industrial accident centuries ago. The once sleepy town was flooded with horribly contaminated waste water, but, despite the obvious hazards, the citizens of Sunken Bank were 'compelled' to remain. One by one, they would succumb to sickness, and aggressively fight any attempt to remove them from their homes. One by one, the sickness would take them, until eventually, the village was completely abandoned.

Some years later, Sigrún Sanitations came to Sunken bank and established a near-permanent a clean-up operation. Hundreds of hired sanitation workers have failed to purge the village of its pollution for decades, and nearly just as many have fallen victim to the town in their own mysterious ways. As one of the many faceless workers assigned to this operation, you awake in the darkness - finding yourself deep underground after a massive earthquake. Here, in this Sunken Labyrinth, you don a massive diving suit and venture out into the depths. With oxygen in short supply, and toxic waste seeming into the cracks of the caverns surrounding you, you'll come face to face with something even stranger in your fight for survival.

You are not alone.

  • Chart a path through a massive, freely-explorable labyrinth deep underground.
  • Use a variety of tools to help in your navigation, from flares and throwable bottles to emergency oxygen bladders.
  • Venture carefully and gather supplies as you sneak your way around the vengeful water spirits who call the Sunken Labyrinth their home.
  • Gather and ration your oxygen reserves as you dive deeper into the labyrinth's flooded lower levels, contending with reduced visibility, toxic contamination, and surrealist spaces as you attempt to chart your path.
  • Collect a wide variety of keys to open up new sections of the map, with new supplies to grab and ever more daunting patrols of spirits to evade.
  • Keep one eye peeled for approaching threats as you manage your inventory of items in real-time - act quickly if you don't want to be caught off guard.

ÓÐR: The Sunken Flesh is an in-progress project, and will receive occasional updates into the future. We consider this initial release for the Liminal Jam to be a proof-of-concept prototype, and would greatly appreciate any feedback you may have!

We are collecting a list of known issues that we plan to address and prioritize in upcoming updates. Our goal is for this list to reflect the project's state as a prototype as accurately as possible. Please make note of these issues for yourself if you decide to give ÓÐR: The Sunken Flesh a play:

  • Enemy AI is still very WIP and can sometimes display a lot of odd behavior. Enemies can get stuck, or get confused on your current location. This is far from ideal and is one of our top priorities for improvement.
  • The game world is very large, and it can be easy to get lost as a result. We know this is a bigger issue for some people than others, and we're planning to add a map feature in the future.
  • It can be difficult to determine what is or is not a solid wall in some rooms due to the low lighting and the nature of the game's visuals. We are looking into possible solutions for this problem, and will be tweaking the look as we continue to update.
  • Several art elements are still WIP, including the visual design of several rooms. You may notice that some are currently more detailed than others.
  • Stats and timings for things like enemy grab interactions or oxygen drain are also very much WIP. We plan on tweaking and further refining these values over time.
  • Additional enemy type(s) and behaviors are planned to help add more variety to the labyrinth. We also plan to add more item types and functionality for existing items.
  • The button layout displayed in-game when using a controller currently only supports Xbox style button icons.

OÐR got featured on the Arcane Cache, a most underground blog for most underground games.

Art style and audio design (including music) are dense, fitting and coherent. The game was made by a small team in the course of a month working on a fitting concept that they had in mind beforehand. As a result, the game is unusual well developed and produced when compared to an average jam entry. Yet it is still in active development, and the developers claim that they plan to do further polishing on it. I earnestly hope that they don’t overdo it: Grinding on the wrong places might remove to much in this case. The combination of hostility, strangeness and angularity is very unique and fun, and it would be great if some of the latter would make it into the final thing. That is to be said: The game is – at least as far as I made it last night – already fully playable and well worth to check out. The scope of the current game is large, it feels feature complete, and I didn’t encounter anything that could count as a bug.
